Sometimes I just crave a simple pasta and marinara dish and this sauce always hits the spot! Why would I pay for this at an Italian restaurant when this is way cheaper and usually better? I love the chunks of tomatoes, and the spices really give it a great savory flavor. I usually double the recipe and freeze half. Then when I’m running short on time, I just thaw and heat it in a saucepan. I’ve served this with spicy Italian sausage as well and it is delicious!

Chunky Marinara Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can peeled and diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook 2 to 4 minutes until crisp-tender, stirring frequently.

Mix in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar, oregano and salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer 15 to 20 minutes or until flavors are blended, stirring frequently.
