Happy weekend!!

I had an eight mile run planned for this morning so I tried to prepare for it yesterday by hydrating, planning a route and getting to bed at a decent time…I was in bed by 10:00 but didn’t fall asleep for a few hours…argh.

My alarm was set for 6:30 but I didn’t end up getting out of bed until an hour later…I actually had a dream that it was raining and I had to push my run back! I woke up to dry ground. Smile I got dressed and fueled up with half of a bagel with veggie cream cheese and an iced coffee (which worked well, no stomach issues!).

I decided to wear my fuel belt today and packed a GU and some fruit snacks…and left a mess in my wake! No time for cleaning…not when you’re racing the heat! Open-mouthed smile

I clipped my Reid’s iPod to the belt but tucked the headphones away. I wanted to get into a good groove first! It was 60 degrees and perfect running weather. I started out slow and steady, since I knew I had some tough hills to conquer not too far into my route. When racing in New England you need to train on hills! They’re pretty much inevitable.

I kept repeating a few ‘mantras’ throughout the run…for hills, slow and steady, for downhill portions and flat areas, settle (as in, settle into a doable pace). It may sound kind of silly but it really helped a lot!! Especially the reminders to take it easy and not burn myself out.

And a big accomplishment for me…I ran the whole route without any music!!! This is huge since I would always run with headphones up until just recently. Applefest is very strict about their ‘no music’ rule so I struggled last year without it. I’m overcoming that crutch! I was very excited about that.

8.04 miles in 1:24:29, a 10:31 pace (if I remember correctly). We are making progress! I gave myself a goal of 1:30 so I was happy.

I ate my GU at mile 4.5 and I may just need to stick with that, rather than the chews. I’m not a huge fan of the texture but it worked better than trying to chew something.

Shoes, we’ve had a good run (haha) but it’s time to move on…my knees are starting to hurt!

I stretched and made some breakfast…2 eggs over easy and the other half of the bagel.

My legs were feeling pretty tight so I figured staying active would help, rather than hanging out on the couch. A clean car is a happy car! Mine is shining now.

I skipped out and grabbed some lunch from Coll’s…a garden salad with some harvest chicken salad (with dried cranberries and walnuts). An apple for munching. Lots of hydration.

Next up…making some salsa!

Enjoy your weekend!!

Music while running: yay or nay?

Hi friends! Hope you had a great weekend! Did anyone lose power or have any damage from the hurricane? Thankfully it calmed down a lot before it reached us and we never lost power and only have a few branches down. I know others weren’t so lucky, though…

Saturday morning I had my mind set on getting a run in and it looked to be a perfect day, 70 and overcast. Seemingly as soon as I stepped outside, the sun started peeping through. Come on! Both of our iPod’s were dead so I set out on a silent trek. I planned to do a 3 mile loop twice and stop back at my house for water, rather than carry it with me.

I have a tough time running in the heat and I usually will let it get the best of me and quit early. Not so today! I actually enjoyed going music-less and it helped me to focus more on my pace. I stopped into Rite Aid and grabbed a few gulps of water since I figured if I went home, I might not go around again. I set a goal of 1:05 because of the heat and came in at 1:05:49…I’ll take it!

Red as a beet.

Hooray for getting back into the training groove!

My sister-in-law had her baby (a boy) on Friday so we stopped in at the hospital on Saturday…so cute!! I didn’t get a picture, though…

Some recent meals and snacks …

A garden salad and curry and grape chicken salad from Coll’s Farm stand…so delicious!! And cheap! I think it was around $4 total.

Local peaches…so juicy! I need to buy some more…

Leftovers served over a bed of sauteed kale…Reid ordered this pasta dish at a restaurant, and then the leftovers served two. Seriously.

Lunch today…spring mix with tomato and avocado, with a side of hummus and crackers.

Dressed with honey balsamic dressing. I think I could live off of avocados and avocados alone. Love.

Well, I’m off to get a run in! I haven’t decided the mileage yet… Smile

What was your favorite meal this weekend?

Hi guys! Hope you had a great Monday!

After getting some cleaning done this morning I showered and headed to the farmer’s market…I’m going to all the ones in the area to hopefully find a good one. Well, no dice. It was pretty small and didn’t have much of a variety. Ah, small towns! I did pick up a small hand-carved wooden spoon but forgot to take a picture.

I stopped at Nature’s Green Grocer on the way home and picked up some goodies…

Blueberries, apples (pink lady), and an avocado, a mango kombucha, bread, ham, and a new bar. Everything is organic.

So, this was my second time trying kombucha (fermented tea) and I just can’t do it…I want to like it since it’s really good for you but I just don’t. The mango was better than the other one I tried (not sure what flavor it was) but still not delicious.

For lunch I made a quick salad with romaine topped with pasta salad and Italian dressing.

We made grilled pizza again for dinner…I experimented with sauteed garlic kale and feta…

Reid said it was “definitely not fabulous.” LOL…it was better in theory. Something was just off.

I had one slice of the kale and feta and two slices with ham.

I headed to the gym for a 6:30 Zumba class that was amazing, but hot! I was dripping by the end and actually felt a little dizzy. My water bottle was definitely empty by the time it was over! I finished it off with a quick 10-minute weight session and headed home.

After a cool shower, I’m watching The Bachelorette and enjoying an apple. It’s one of the best apples I’ve ever had and I could eat all of them. But I guess I’ll share. 🙂

Good night!

To buy a…fat pig? Not quite.

I woke up before my alarm this morning at 7:30, surprising myself as I usually sleep in a little on Saturdays. It was just as well, though, because I had big plans for this morning.

After laying in bed for a little while I got up and got dressed for the gym. I grabbed a banana, water bottle, and my iPod and was out the door in a jiffy.

I got to the gym at around 8:15, figuring that it would be packed. Not so! I was pleasantly surprised that there were only a few other people there!

I ended up having an awesome workout…I didn’t rush myself and used machines/weights that I might not normally use if more people were there. Sometimes I am too embarrassed to use a new machine or go all out with the free weights when it’s busy…I’m working on it! I just remind myself that other people are busy with their own workouts and not watching to see if I’m using the machines correctly.

I warmed up with 10 minutes on the elliptical and then did a full  body strength session. I was able to up the weights on most of the machines so I was pretty excited about that. I also did a lot more with free weights, though I’m still using a low weight (5 lbs.). I actually used some of the moves I learned in P90X! It really taught me a lot in terms of utilizing free weights, as well as different stretches.

I finished off the workout with some ab work and 20 minutes of spinning (set on random). It took me about 1.25 hours total.

After toweling off I headed out. I grabbed an iced coffee and stopped at a farmer’s market up the street from me. It was a bust, with only about four tables. 😦 I was so looking forward to it, too! I still managed to grab some raspberry jam and some strawberries.

There are a few other farmer’s markets in our area so I’ll have to check them out some other time.

The strawberries are really ripe so I figured I better use some up…strawberry protein pancakes for the win! I used this mix that I had sitting around and added half a scoop of protein powder (and upped the milk a little).

I then diced a handful of strawberries and added them to the batter.

Enjoyed with some butter and real maple syrup…the perfect weekend breakfast!

They almost tasted like a muffin, so fluffy with little chunks of strawberry…yum!

Good to the last bite!

Do you have a farmer’s market near you? What are your favorite things to buy?

Happy Saturday!! It’s rainy and dreary over here, but that’s ok…

Last night I went with my parents and my younger sister to do some shopping and dining. We ended up going to the Natick Collection (in Natick, MA). For dinner we stopped into Met Bar & Grill for some gourmet burgers. They have a whole menu devoted to burgers (with another menu with lots of other options but I didn’t even get a chance to look at it).

To start, we ordered the spinach artichoke flatbread, which was really good. I may just order this and a salad next time! I forgot both my SLR and point and shoot at home so phone pics will have to do.

I had two slices.

For my entree I ordered a beef burger with pepper jack cheese, arugula, mushrooms, and roasted garlic aioli (I think they forgot it though) on a whole wheat bun. The burgers were really thick and a little hard to eat. Mine was a little dry too. It came with a side of mayo (ick) and I ended up using a little to make up for the missing aioli. The french fries were delicious though! 🙂

I think I’m coming to realize that I just don’t really like red meat in general. They have a salmon burger and a veggie burger that I would like to try though.

We did a bit of shopping afterwards…I picked up a few shirts but may be returning two of them. We grabbed some yogurt from Red Mango before heading out. It was a fun evening!

This morning has been relaxing with a trip to the nail salon for a mani/pedi and a stop at the farm stand on my way home. We were out of bread, milk, and fruit so it was much needed!

Red grapes (organic), watermelon, cantaloupe (o), an avacado (o), minced garlic (o), garlic and herb goat cheese, cherry tomatoes…

Spinach, shredded carrots, strawberries, fat-free milk (o)…

Sunflower butter, Honest Ade lemonade, a pb cookie (the best ever), and kalamata olive and rosemary bread (hello again!).

I also picked up a NH made t-shirt made with organic cotton since they were all on sale and I have a shopping problem. It’s really soft!

I’m enjoying an iced coffee and will make some lunch soon…probably using every last thing that I bought! 🙂

Lilacism by Essie…I’m kind of on the fence about it.

Are you a hot or iced coffee drinker?

Obviously, I am strictly an iced coffee drinker. I don’t really enjoy hot beverages of any kind, even in the winter! I’ll have an occasional cup of hot tea but that’s about it.

I'm Ashley. Wife and new mom. Lover of food, running, baking, strength training, fashion, iced coffee, interior design, and photography. Welcome to Will Run for Food, where I document bits of all of the above (and more)! Thanks for stopping by!

I’d love to hear from you!
